Do I need to know my level first?

No. The test covers A1 to C2 in one sitting, so it places you on the CEFR scale rather than asking you to choose a level in advance. The result is a level, not a pass or a fail.

Can I retake the test?

Yes, as often as you like at no extra cost. Access does not expire, so you can sit it again later to show that your level has moved up.

Should I take the business or the general English test?

The two English tests differ in setting: one uses workplace situations and vocabulary, the other covers everyday language. If the certificate is for a job application, the business version is usually the better fit.

About this test

The test measures how you handle English in ordinary use — following a conversation, reading something through, and finding the words that say what you actually mean.

What’s assessed

Forty questions, drawn from four areas and set in everyday situations.

Everyday vocabularyPlaces, plans, work, travel, description
Grammar and structureTenses, modals, conditionals, word order
Reading comprehensionMessages, articles, and what was implied rather than said
Everyday communicationAsking, explaining, agreeing, and reading tone

Your answers produce a GECT score out of 100 and the CEFR level that goes with it, from A1 to C2. The test covers the whole scale, so you never have to pick a level before you start — the result is what tells you where you stand.

Why this matters

A1–C2

the six levels of the Common European Framework, defined by the Council of Europe and used as the reference for language ability worldwide — which is what makes your result readable to an employer who has never heard of any particular test.

Everything happens online, whenever suits you: no appointment, no test centre, no application. You buy the test, sign in, and start.

The forty questions are multiple choice and entirely text-based. There is no listening or speaking section, so you need neither a microphone nor speakers — it runs in a browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone, and a stable connection is the only requirement.

There is no time limit. Most people finish in about 45 minutes, and you can move back through the questions and change any answer before you submit.

The moment you submit, you get your GECT score, the CEFR level it corresponds to, and a personal certificate as a downloadable PDF. Every certificate carries a unique ID that an employer, a recruiter or an admissions office can check on our verification page.

Your access does not expire and retakes cost nothing, so you can sit the test again months later to show that your level has moved on.

One test,
the whole CEFR scale

Most exams assess a slice of the range, so you have to know roughly where you sit before you book one. This test covers all six levels in a single sitting — which is why the result is a level, not a pass or a fail.

Familiar everyday phrases and very basic expressions.
Simple, routine exchanges on familiar topics.
The main points of clear standard input met at work.
Complex text and technical discussion in your field.
Fluent and spontaneous, flexible for professional use.
Virtually everything read with ease, including nuance.
