About this test
The test measures how you handle French in ordinary use — following a conversation, reading something through, and finding the words that say what you actually mean.
Your answers produce an overall score, a score for each of the four parts and the CEFR level that goes with it, from A1 to C2. The test covers the whole scale, so you never have to pick a level before you start — the result is what tells you where you stand.
the six levels of the Common European Framework, defined by the Council of Europe and used as the reference for language ability worldwide — which is what makes your result readable to an employer who has never heard of any particular test.
Source: Council of EuropeThe 48 questions come in four parts: listening, reading, grammar and vocabulary. You answer by clicking, dragging or tapping — there is no typing and no speaking section, so you don’t need a microphone. For the listening part you need headphones or speakers, and each recording plays up to twice. The test runs in a browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone; a stable connection is the only other requirement.
There is no time limit. Most people finish in about 60 minutes, and you can move back through the questions and change any answer before you submit.
The moment you submit, you see your CEFR level and your score for each part, and you can download your personal certificates as PDFs — one in French and one in English. Every certificate carries a unique ID and a QR code that an employer, a recruiter or an admissions office can check on our verification page.
Your access does not expire and retakes cost nothing, so you can sit the test again months later to show that your level has moved on.
